Design for the phone first
In Armenia most visits to a small-business site come from a phone. Design the phone version first and the desktop second, not the other way round. In practice:
- The phone number and the main button are visible without scrolling.
- Text is at least 16px. Armenian letters at 13px are hard to read on a small screen.
- Buttons are big enough for a thumb, about 44px tall.
- Nothing important sits in a hover effect, because phones have no hover.
Armenian typography is its own problem
Many popular fonts have no Armenian letters. The browser then swaps in a fallback font, and a page that looked elegant in English suddenly mixes two typefaces in one line. It is the most common reason an Armenian site "looks cheap".
What works:
- Choose fonts with real Armenian support, such as Noto Sans Armenian, or check that your Latin font has a matching Armenian partner.
- Test long Armenian words in headlines. Armenian words are often longer than English ones, and a headline that fits in English can break badly in Armenian.
- Keep line length around 60–75 characters for body text in every language.
Trust before beauty
A visitor decides in a few seconds whether you are a real business. Things that help, roughly in order:
- A real address and a map, or a clear "we work across Armenia".
- Prices, or at least "from" prices. Hidden prices make people leave.
- Photos of the actual place, team or products, not stock images.
- Reviews with names, ideally linked to Google.
- Fast loading. A slow site feels unreliable before it is even seen.
Speed is part of design
Heavy sliders, autoplay video and five tracking scripts make a site slow on Armenian mobile networks. Each design choice has a weight. A good rule: the first screen should load in under two seconds on a mid-range phone.
Mistakes we see most often
- A beautiful homepage and nothing else: no separate page per service, so Google has nothing to show for specific searches.
- A contact form as the only way to reach you. In Armenia people prefer to call, or to write on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- English-only sites for a local audience, or Armenian-only sites for a diaspora audience.
- Design files nobody can edit later, so prices on the site stay from two years ago.
See it on real sites
